The quake's epicenter was located in El Sereno, a neighborhood near South Pasadena in the northeast area of Los Angeles.
The quake was felt across a wide area, including downtown Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, and Orange County.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The quake was the strongest to hit the Los Angeles area since a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in 2014.
The United States Geological Survey says there is a 1 in 100 chance of a larger earthquake occurring in the next week.
