First Minister Humza Yousaf has defended inviting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Scotland, following criticism from former foreign secretary David Cameron and former foreign secretary James Cleverly. Cameron has threatened to withdraw diplomatic support to Scotland, while Cleverly has threatened to withdraw altogether.
Yousaf met with Erdogan on November 7 at the COP28 climate conference in Egypt. Cameron and Cleverly have criticized Yousaf for meeting with Erdogan, who has been accused of human rights abuses.
Yousaf has defended his decision to meet with Erdogan, stating that it was important to engage with world leaders on climate change. He also said that he raised concerns about human rights with Erdogan.
